GROWING MINIATURE ROSE FROM SEED

Miniature Rose 'Angel Rose'
Rosa chinensis

We selected this variety because it is a unique perennial grown from seed. It produces a perfect miniature rose on a little bush in the first year. The seeds however are slower to germinate than other varieties in the collection. Below are detailed instructions for starting the seeds indoors. A controlled, indoor environment encourages germination and vigorous seedling growth.

Perennial: Summer and fall bloom. Very frost hardy.

Exposure: Full sun

Planting Depth: ¼"

Space Seeds: 2" apart

Days to Germinate: 4 to 6 weeks

Mature Height: 1½' to 2'

Start Indoors: Select a container with good drainage. Fill the container with seed starting mix. Place seeds 2" apart or seed ribbon in a shallow furrow in soil  and cover with ¼" soil. Keep container between 60° F and 70° F and gently water so that soil is moist but not soggy. Provide a strong light source until ready to plant in an outdoor container.

Plant Outdoors: When seedlings are just large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots. Feed seedlings every 2 weeks with half-strngth fertilizer. When 3" to 4" tall, gradually acclimate the seedlings to outdoor conditions and plant out 12" to 18" apart in full sun.

Plants will mature at 1½' to 2'. Cut-off faded blooms, fertilize and water regularly throughout the season. In fall, cut-back woody stems for vigorous growth the following spring.
